Using data journalism to investigate ISIL

This week on data journalism gave me a few ideas about our online storytelling approach: using interactive features for our website to avoid our piece being just plain text.

Jonathan showed us examples of free tools to help us capture, analyse and visualise results.

Now we’re interested in using CartoDB for a geographical data visualisation of how ISIL uses Twitter, or indeed whether most of the noise is even coming from the region. Information like that is a lot easier to absorb in visual form, for example:

Gephi will also be useful tool for showing ISIL’s online networks and connections, much like it was used to visualise the Egyptian Revolution on Twitter.

Finally Jonathan urged us to check out Storify, another very user-friendly data tool for our project.
